When we arrived in Karachi, on my route to start a new life in Oman from the country I was born (Zanzibar in East Africa), the plane was already 2 hours too late in departing from Nairobi Airport in Kenya. As a result we missed the connecting flight to Muscat, it had left without us. There was no other flight till next week after that. Despite our pleas, the Airline refused to help as we were only about 15 from the same connection. There was another flight to Abu Dhabi in 3 days time, so we were accommodated in an International hotel near the Airport. As my English was ‘better’ than the others in the group, I ended being the de facto leader and spokesman of the group! The Airline had told us they could not assign the tickets to any other Airline except theirs and their flights only!

When I asked how we would then travel to Muscat, they replied you can take a car from Abu Dhabi and it can take you to Oman. What they did not tell us that we had to eventually hire a Land Rover 109 pickup, and it would take almost the whole day through rugged terrain via Buraimi to reach Muscat. It was 1972 anyway! Nothing you could do about it!

When we reached the unmarked border, we got our passports stamped through. But just as we were getting into our pickup, there came this old looking ‘Omani type person’. He was trying to ask us if we were interested to change our passports for an UAE one (Abu Dhabi). He asked me if I was educated, and I said Yes. So he said – You can get a very good job in Abu Dhabi if you had this!. I said No thanks, my (late) Father is waiting for me in Muscat. That did not shake him, but I was firm anyway! When I arrived in Muscat, I got a job in the Army as an Officer Cadet – but I soon realized that the Army disciplined life was not for me being an outspoken forthright person who does not shirk or is scared to express his mind – especially if annoyed and disturbed. So I joined this Oil Company instead.

I ended being a rank of a Senior Supervisor in Human Resources at the end of Early Voluntary Retirement. Those who joined the Army came out as Colonels and Lieutant General and better off too, but that is life for you! You make your choices in life, and you end up having to bear the consequences too! Whether losses or fruits!

Consequences I ended up having too when my Consultancy business went bust, with dreadful consequences and 3 years later I am still trying hard to get my life and ‘knots together’ – so to speak – but that is another story!. I do not want to bore you, because I have said it all before! Anyway, I ended up looking for another job after going retirement, but that again is life for you! I could not get any job in here, so I tried outside.

Imagine my surprise when in my first interview only, the UAE National Human Resources Manager asked if I could start immediately? It was 2 weeks later after all the necessary documentations and clearances that I started working in this Oil Company in Abu Dhabi. The day I started work, I saw the face of that old man trying to ‘sell me’ his passports. A paradox and eventual unpredicted turn of events! Though I was not a National – as the job required I found to my loss after 9 months on it – I was in charge of Training and Development of National Staff (ADPPOC – IRSHAD), only these Nationals were not Omanis but UAE Nationals.

In all my life in PDO, I had always the photographs of His Majesty in my Office. Here not being a Manager (and in a cubicle too!), I was not allowed by the Company procedures to have the photograph of (Late) Sheikh Zayed (PBUH) and his 2 sons. However, I could put them on my own account. This I did, and with it added the photo of my own Ruler on the side, including the one when HM had paid a visit to then ailing Sh. Zayed. I raised immediate jealousy and envy from the others working there, who accused me of trying to use the AGCC connection to further my career progression and prospects.

This just shows that even the most of innocent, sincere and genuine intention can be twisted by those who wish to do the twisting! This I too learnt later in life as all too possible with human beings! However, the UAE Nationals were very pleased and happy with me – and they asked me – why Sheikh Zayed? I simply replied he was the Ruler of the country, and I have always been national and patriotic – and why not. The day I lost the job because the job was being Emiratised, those who did not like me sneered – so where did the keeping of the photographs take you, we did not and still have our jobs, whilst you lost yours!!

Amazing and shocking how a simple act can raise so much emotions, hostilities and antipathy in others!! But that too is another story! There were some Omanis too who had changed their passports, and I was ‘advised’ to apply to save my job – that too I denied. If you ask me after all the troubles I got on later, I still think I did the right thing. That is convincing for you!

The East Africans have this saying – they kill a person already by the early rumours of one’s death, eventually death follows later. When I heard of Sheikh Zayed being so ill, I sent an E-Mail (consoling) to my peers UAE Nationals, but none did reply. Although sometimes we think we are the same, each society reacts differently to a given scenario and situation, but then that too is life, isn’t it? When I heard the sad and tragic news of the death of HH Sheikh Zayed, I tried to control my tears of sadness.

As Arabs we have been brought up that a man to cry is an embarrassment, and we must hold on to our tears as best as we can, otherwise our manhood is at stake. Life can be twisted really, I have a son who can cry easily, whilst I have a daughter who is as hard as a rock, though she is bursting instead. I think we need to revisit our Big Book of Advices and Wisdom!

I always used to watch intently the TV photographs of Late Sheikh Zayed. He not only emanates great statesmanship, leadership and wisdom, but he had always a great sense of amusement and merriment. You always used to see other leaders laugh along, including the Aide de Camps (ADCs) on both sides. You always wonder what kind of jokes he might be cracking, but you never get to know anyway! When he was with the children, he was most at ease and comfort. They treated him as the ‘grandfather’ and not as a Ruler. You always worry – children being children – they will perhaps misbehave, but the Late Sheikh Zayed had a way with children, and he always controlled the situation!

When he used to go in his motorcades, he would suddenly stop and talk to the peoples on the side of the road. A great benevolent leader, but yet simple and flexible in life. A man of his peoples. A man in touch with his peoples. A man who as a Leader was always ready to listen, and wanted to learn and know what his peoples wanted. He always asked peoples who met him if he could do anything for them, as we are told now in his autobiography. The thing that really show his leadership is he never forgot his roots, the way he lived and even his food was simple.

If you looked at the TV programmes and see how he touched peoples, you can see by the expressions of sadness and unhappiness from all over the Arab and Islamic world, and the whole world in general. From Pakistan, Indonesia, Yemen, Palestine, the AGCC, Europe, USA, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Syria etc. One great leader who touched everybody all over the world! When our HM had personally gone to offer condolences, my family all clapped. It was a great pride and honour to see HM there to bid farewell to Late His Highness Sheikh Zayed. A chip of the old block is the son, His Highness Sheikh Khailfa – the new President of UAE - and we are all praying that he follows the Father’s steps always - Amin

May Allah SWT Bestow eternal peace and a high place in Heaven to Late Sheikh Zayed – Amin – Amin. May Allah too Accept our Fast and Eid Mubarak! Amin (Amen).

A.03 - Are You Afraid? - Be Very Much...Afraid!

Short Takes Book Article.

Have you had this great fear and premonition that something very bad is going to happen soon – and sometimes it does? Sometimes time passes, or you go to bed and nothing has happened – only to find with great dread, palpitations and trepidations that something did actually happen during the night – and if you are lucky you find it next morning. Otherwise, you leave others to say, “actually he or she had said about something bad was going to happen, poor person let him (or her) rest in peace! In a worst-case scenario!

A friend of mine had this premonition that his death would be caused by a burst tire (he had dreamt that his late grandfather had told him ‘to check the car tires’, and his premonition came true!

My mother-in-law (the great good lady – let her soul rest in eternal peace) had this knack. She will feel very much perturbed, disturbed and in great unease and discomfort. She will even say it – ‘I think it is x, something is happening to x, I know I can feel it’ Her family were used to her whims and fancies, used to let it go in stride that is all due to her old age and being over worry - but many times the good lady was proved to be correct. Only her family did not want to tell her the truth all the time, lest she became more disturbed, agitated and desolate!

One of my favourite readings was (still is) about ‘Stranger Than Fiction’ series by many writers (but mainly by one John Macklin). I have his full Encyclopaedia on his works. It is one work that I had really enjoyed to read. These series are full of paranormal and supernatural stories titles like ‘The strange curse of shadow of death’, “He knew how he was going to die’, or ‘The loud noises from underneath’ etc. They are sure to scare you out of your wits, yet the good self keep reading them on. Even the good wife thinks I am ‘one of those ‘not normal type’ (cranks and weirdoes!) to read such stories (she is scared, never read one!).

When I was a young boy in this island I grew up in East Africa (Mafia - not the Italian one) but the Arabic one for the place (island) without (she without) there were a lot of scare and weird stories there. These are not tales that I was told, but had actually experienced myself or by my close friends – like for example: -

 Cars cutting off engines whenever they reached one special baobab tree, especially after evening prayers (Magharib) and for no reason. It never happened when our late father (pbuh) was there!

 This beautiful damsel wandering in the night (very tall fair Arab lady). They said she was a ‘Jinn’ (ghost, fairy) trying to trap gullible (and usually drunk) men. It was said she actually walks through walls. If that will not scare you to run (and forget all others ideas you had in your head) what else will?
 One old Bedouin (Omani) telling my father one day early morning ‘that our grandmother had died in Hail Al-Ghaaf (Quriyaat)’. In those days mails took a month, when the letter was received, it was the exact date (the man had insisted to my disbelieving late father to write down the date!).
 It was said this man travelled at night (how – do not ask me! I never asked him, nor did I want to find out!) to and back to Oman. To prove his point, he had fresh ripening dates in his house (guess nobody ate them except himself, who else in his right mind would want to try?)
 Stories of people changing into ‘cats and monkeys’ and coming to people’s houses (we used to think our poor dad (pbuh) had lost it, when he used to shout at them in Arabic to go away, and they actually did!).
 How my late elder brother (pbuh) beat a cat badly because it ate his food. Next day he was seriously sick, everybody said he was a goner. They had to go to apologise to an old African man who looked like he was just beaten up! Only then my brother recovered.
 When we moved to Hamriya in 1970s, a friend of mine narrates his story. He was feeling sick and he could not to the office. So he told his wife, I am calling in sick and going back to bed. Imagine his surprise when his wife told him ‘you are confusing me, I just saw you in the kitchen going to work, and now you are back in bed’? At the time the man used to think he did the biggest mistake to marry someone he hardly knew, but repeated examples finally convinced him ‘there was a presence’ - especially when he too experienced ‘two wives in different scenarios’ (how enchanting, fantasy time?)
 Have you had this experience of going to a place for the first time (dejavu?) and realising that you have been in that place before? Has not happened to you, I hear you say? Well, I shall scare you – it happened to me. I saw a family holiday film. The setting is in Cyprus. Can you imagine? I thought I recognized the places and could even recognize the Greek language - as if it is something I had spoken before!
 Then have you heard of NDEs? (Near Death Experiences?). Lots of lights, and travelling through air and seeing dead relatives who tell you ‘to go back, your time is not ready yet! (They need a column of their own, not for now!).

The question I keep asking myself is if we had all these ‘crafts and witchery’, how come the peoples who possesses them are still poor and destitute? Or would not help us fight our enemies too? Does this not scare you? It should really!

Guess some of you may be saying – this guy has just started the column and has already run out of stories to write. Perhaps scared you in the process, eh? Nothing wrong to admit it – we all get scared and frightened sometimes. Perfectly normal human trait and behaviour, nothing illogical, alien, or strange! Or inconclusive either!

A.01 - The Trudging Sick Old Man!

It is all part of the customs, traditions, heritage – long time ages ago our forefathers used to do the same thing – the rest of us just continue to do what was handed down to us in generations. Who are we to ask why? Is the fear of being ostracised not enough to put us in our place to continue the customs and traditions. Being social outcasts?

What has got modernity or ‘new ways of doing things’ got to do with it? Are our values and things that we hold dear to us not enough to keep us in our place and continue to do what was required of us? What was expected of us? And who are you to question – you one single person to ‘rock the whole boat’. So what if the others are doing it differently – we are not they, and they are not we – so just do as you are told? End of subject! Period! Finito!

The old man came trudging and painstakingly in. He moved in slow steady measured steps. What if he was holding all the others behind him? Was he not an elder who deserved respect and esteem to be followed quietly behind?

Like all normal funeral congregations, everybody had stood up as soon as the old man came in. Was he with the others who came in? Or was he just alone – wanted to do his bit too in the social customs and habits to offer his condolences also to the bereaved family?

Sometimes in these congregations, you wish somebody would turn up, so you can get the ‘excuse’ to get up and stretch your legs, after squatting on the floor for ages, with numb still legs. How do those from the villages manage it? They sit down, cross-legged for hours! Getting up is no problem – it comes up naturally and quickly. Like waking up in the morning and brushing your teeth! Anyway we the ‘towners are modern, are put to the test’ now and then when such gatherings are there. No dispute – the funerals are the worst types!

A joke a friend of mine had made. What if someone had invented a machine, a tool etc. You press the button or switch; there it will make you get up quickly, with no hassle or hesitation. Would that not sell well in the community?

Forget about the guy – his other ‘invention was to make disposable plastic coffee cups (the small ones served for Arabic Coffee) Why should 4 of 5 (or sometimes even more) people drink from the same cup – waiting till others have finished. With all these diseases around (Aids, Cancers etc) do we want to drink coffee from the same cup 4 others or more have drink from? Why at least not wash it as we go along? No wonder his friends tease him – they call him the ‘European’ man, his outlook and views are more ‘foreign’ than ‘local’. So what if he had stayed years and years abroad – have not some of us done the same? But did we change? No, perhaps only in little places – like using plates for each one – instead of one big tray of Biriyani meat dish to be spoilt - eaten by only four or five guests (the worst is when there is plain rice and curry – favourite is kingfish curry! The rice just floats in the curry! )

Anyway back to the old man.

Usually the bereaved family (Senior ones at least) sit in one centre place. Their places near about are reserved for the VIPs – The big cats, the big fish, call them what you want. My late father (PBUH) always said – ‘no one kisses your hand unless you have money or power – have you seen anyone kiss the hand of a poor man or beggar (unless he was the parent?) My late father had a word for everything. His theory was if the person was not rich and famous, then the only reason, was the man has spiked his hand with honey! What other reason? To kiss that hand?

The other family members get scattered in different places. Few people visit know all the members – unless they are close to them. Usually one knows one or two of the family. You visit (and make a point to get noted and to be noticed) that Khalid or Ali knew you came and he saw you too!

Anyway, this old man had reached my place. As I looked at him, sweating and trudging along, my humane impulse was to hug the old man. Tell him ‘Sir, your journey is over – no need to tax or burden yourself any further to finish the line of congregation. You can rest here now by me (or perhaps those in the beginning of the line felt the same but did nothing?)

I tried that once in another mosque. The old man there had pushed me rudely aside – ‘excuse me’, he said, are you my son? Do I know you? Full of red embarrassment no words came out, but politeness reigned in – the others near pretended nothing had happened, and continued normally! This time I said to myself – M no more heroics’ – keep to your place, keep your distance.

Ten minutes later I wished I had let the subconscious me had taken over. No that it would make any difference, at least for my conscience! What is written is written! It is all fatalistic outlook and believing and in thinking. Nothing you say or do can change anything. Finito! Period! End of discussions! It is written man, are you not a believer?

The old man went around, making sure he had paid his respects to everyone. The whole mass of people respectfully following behind. He then moved near some peoples he knew.

Then it happened! 5 days ago my good sister had sent me an e-mail - How to survive a Heart Attack. Where was she, not to send it to me earlier – before this poor old man collapsed with a heart attack?

I though I had gone for a Basic First Aid course (OK certificate, expired, so what?) “Any doctors around? The shout went out. Any nurse? Any First Aiders (why are you quiet M? – Panic man – had forgotten – what does one do in a heart attack? ‘Kiss of life’ or pump the heart? Or was it both? Or what?

Some good men came in – please give him some air, do not gather close to him. Then they carried him off to the hospital in one Good Samaritan’s car (Toyota Prado) – M – I though you had a Dodge Durango – a bigger car, what happened to you? - Please leave me alone, a thin voice says – I am feeling guilty and bad about this whole episode and incident. Just leave me alone for now!

To make it worse my ex-Manager, before I took my retirement, was with me. Good
Good thing I did not say it – I had the First Aid Certificate, but in the real test had failed to use it. Got pretty scared. Feeling all bad about it. I am dead sorry!

The mood in the congregation hit a bombshell ten minutes later.

The old man – he died on the way to the hospital. He never regained conscience. I do not know even his actual name, but I guess that He was a Hero - he had finished greeting the whole congregation, but at the cost of his life Or as my Manager feeling my guilt told me - it is all written – he was to go this way – nothing to feel bad about it (as if he had read my mind – but I guess he knows M – “you have ruined your career prospects by caring too much for people – a people’s person you are”. I guess he felt no need for lectures now, anyway I have retired and gone, flew away from the nest!

Poor old man! May Allah keep you in eternal peace – Amin. You are a hero, you sacrificed your life for your belief, for your customs, heritage and culture. He had come to offer his condolences to the mosque – next day others were coming to the mosque to offer theirs instead to the old man’s family.

I had the opportunity to tell my ex-Manager boss – see boss, this is the end of us all, it is what goodness and good deeds you do that people will remember you.

Instead I said nothing. He too said nothing. There was a ‘telepathy agreement’ to say nothing to each other. Perhaps he knew what I was thinking, and I knew what he was thinking. Sometimes best words are those ‘bonded’ by saying nothing. An opportunity came to impress my old boss, but I simply did nothing. As they say Opportunity comes only once, or strike whilst the iron is still hot!

Poor old man – please forgive me, perhaps I should have stopped you finishing the line, perhaps I should have done something more. Perhaps – but it is too late – The poor man has gone. Perhaps Allah SWT will feel pity on this brave heroic act of the old man and reward him accordingly. One can only hope and pray – Amin.

At the age of 8 years old, four decades ago when we were residing in Mafia Island in Tanzania, my father and I met some wild dogs when we were moving about the island.

My late father (died 2 years ago) cautioned me to hold on to his hand 'and show no fear, because dogs easily smell fear'. But if you act brave and show no fear, they either leave you alone or move away'. At first I did not believe this was to be possible, but the dogs did exactly like dad said they would, and left us alone-despite a lot of initial 'hard' barking earlier on.

At times in life one meets with a lot of situations like above when you are called upon to make difficult and hard decisions and choices. Life is full of making choices. One option is to do nothing and pretend that the problem is not there, the other is as is being said 'to catch the bull by its horns' when you have to act.

Sometimes you make decisions in life which at the time may seem right, only to find out later that you should have acted otherwise. Or you leave an option which you think is wrong, only to find out later that it was the better idea and choice. But the saying always holds true-‘those who dare-actually win’! Those who never try, never win’!

Sometimes situations force you to behave in a way that you would not normally behave otherwise. My business assistant always used to caution me, “you are not in PDO (working for someone) now, you are running your own business, always think of your own business first-not your own personal feelings or inclinations control the situation.

This I had found out recently very difficult to pursue, but in the end I did so despite my own personal first inclinations and feelings- ‘the business must always come first’. The lady from the competition side ‘lost’ in the direction that she was trying to
Push me to go. If I had reacted like she thought I would, I would have eventually been the businesses loser, and she the winner.

My late father used to advise me from the incident of the dogs. He used to tell me ‘if you show fear, or run away, the dogs like it more- because you are condescending yourself to their own level-and they will chase you for sure’.

During this difficult choice I had, my late father had come to me in my dreams to remind me of this incident (or was it by telepathy?). The next morning I phoned my assistant and told her the story of my dad and the wild dogs- and how also the advice she kept pushing to me- to follow became true as very good for the business- thank God! But than even here only time will still tell! For the time being, business is brisk and running well.
